Ten Traveling Tips for Dogs
As a treasured member of the family, many owners choose to take their dog on a family vacation. If you plan to take your four-legged friend by plane, bus or boat, then research is needed to find companies that will accept animals and their rules for traveling with pets. Alternatively, you may decide to include your dog in a journey by car. Whichever way you choose to travel, here are ten tips to ensure the safety and happiness of your dog.
1. Take your dog to the vet in advance of your date of departure. It is important to make certain that your pet is in the picture of health and has up-to-date vaccinations before you travel.
2. Wherever you choose to travel, ensure that you take all of your pet’s documents (license, proof of vaccinations and health certificate) with you. In addition, it is a good idea to take your veterinarian’s telephone number for any non-emergency advice you may require.
3. If your dog is a recent addition to the family, it is wise to ensure that he, or she, is reasonably obedient before embarking on a journey. If your dog understands the basic commands, he, or she, is far less likely to become lost or injured.
4. When staying in a hotel or motel, try to keep your dog quiet and well behaved. Few places admit dogs and if your pet annoys the other guests, there will be even fewer.
5. Similarly, it is crucial that you clean up after your dog. The irresponsible few give all dog owners a bad name. So, be sure that wherever your dog feels the call of nature, you clear up afterwards. It is an unpleasant job, but it is all part of owning a dog.
6. You may find it useful to purchase a good quality traveling crate, which can be purchased from all good pet stores. This is essential if you plan to travel by plane and some bus companies may insist upon it too. The crate needs to be big enough for the dog to comfortably lie down, turn around and stand up. In addition, the crate should always have a water bottle, as a dish could easily be spilled.
7. Car journeys can be very tedious for the passengers. If you are traveling with kids, ensure that they do not begin to tease or pester the dog.
8. Most dogs become very excited by the prospect of a car journey. However, some experience anxiety. This can easily be overcome by gradually accustoming your dog to the car. You may wish to start with sitting in the car motionless. After a time, you can embark on short 10-minute journeys to somewhere fun, such as the beach or park. If you dog associates car journeys with a treat, he or she, will no longer find the experience stressful.
9. Never let your dog hang out of a car window, this can cause serious injury to the face and, specifically, the dog’s eyes.
10. Where possible, always keep your dog on a leash and ensure that he, or she, has identification firmly attached to a collar. You may wish to add details of your temporary accommodation to your dog’s ID tag in case of separation while on vacation. However, your home address and telephone number is crucial.
Taking your beloved pet on vacation can ensure that the entire family has a wonderful time. However, traveling can be stressful and distressing for an animal. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that your dog is relaxed, happy, healthy and, most importantly, safe while on vacation.
