Seven Packing Tips to Take the Hassle Out of Traveling

Packing can be a treacherous and frustrating task, especially when you find all the items you would like to bring do not fit properly. Use these storage tips when packing for your upcoming trip and you’ll find that you have packed efficiently and may even have room to spare.

Check the Weather Forecast

Check the weather forecast before you pack. Your entire packing endeavor will be simplified by following this tip. If you’re planning a trip to Europe in the summer and rain is not on the forecast, don’t trouble yourself with packing bulky rain jackets. If you are the worrying type, go ahead and throw a small poncho or umbrella in your bag but definitely forget the rain boots. Planning for the proper weather conditions will really save room in your luggage for items you do need or souvenirs you wish to bring home.

Plan Your Outfits

By planning your outfits ahead of time you are taking the guesswork out of packing. Instead of being wishy-washy and giving yourself outfit options on your trip, decide early. Pack pants that will go nicely with a variety of tops that you bring instead of bringing a separate pair of pants for each outfit. Pack clothes that match well with multiple other items you have packed. If you know you will have laundry service at some point during the trip, you can reduce the total amount of outfits you need to pack.

Photocopy your Guidebook

While many tourists these days use guidebooks for travel tips, you really do not need to bring the entire guidebook. Photocopy the chapters that are relevant to your trip and just bring those pages. This will greatly cut down on the weight of your luggage and also assist in economizing space. If you are just going to copy the whole book, don’t bother to waste the paper. This tip is especially useful for people who know where they are going or are not spending a lot of time at their destination.

Don’t Bring all your Cosmetics

Travel-sized shampoos and conditioners really play a key role in saving space in your luggage. But instead of buying expensive travel sized shampoo bottles, simply buy small containers that can be filled with your regular shampoo. Don’t forget that most hotels supply shampoo, conditioner, soap and often razors and hand lotion. Unless you are very particular about your cosmetics, plan on using what the hotel supplies.

Roll your Clothing

Rolling has been shown to be the most space-efficient method of packing clothing. Instead of folding your clothing like in retail stores, simply roll your sweaters, pants and shirts. Using the roll method will enable you to pack more clothing and keep it from wrinkling terribly.

Utilize your Shoes

Firstly, do not pack your largest shoes. Instead, wear them while you travel. You can pack smaller shoes, such as sandals or flip-flops in your luggage in plastic bags. Shoes really hog space so it’s better to wear the larger ones. When packing shoes, you do not need to pack them together, like in a shoebox. Instead they should be separated and placed strategically around your luggage. Also shove socks, undershirts and underwear inside of the shoes to save even more space. If you have a shoe bag, you can attach this to the outside of your duffel or suitcase to save interior space.

Pack Chronologically

Try to pack the clothing that you plan on wearing first during the trip at the top of your bag and the clothes you plan on wearing last at the bottom. This will save you from packing and re-packing your bag again and again.
