Russian roads are unfortunately notorious for their poor quality and lack of maintenance, and are joked about light heartedly by foreigners and Russian citizens alike. But deep down there are some serious reasons why Russian drivers suffer constantly as they attempt to traverse Russia and its cities.

Scale

One of the major problems is the sheer scale of the country, Russia is the largest country on Earth and would need an astronomic budget to even come close to creating a road network similar to the USA for example. Just take a look at some figures :

The total area of Russia is 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi)
The two widest separated points in Russia are about 8,000 km (4,971 mi)
The Russian Federation spans 9 time zones
Russia possesses 10% of the world’s arable land
Russia has an extensive coastline of over 37,000 km (22,991 mi)
Lake Baikal alone contains over one fifth of the world’s fresh surface water
The population of Russia is 141,927,297 as of 1 January 2010

Photographs of Russian roads

There are not just the motorways to consider, any major road infrastructure requires some or all of the following :

independent specialized road engineering design teams tendered from companies around the world
full, generous budgeting allowances from public/private partnership and civil engineering departments
optimum quality material conforming to durability world standards to avoid patching every few years
long term cross political party support, motivation and desire
long term goals to increase revenue to remote parts of Russia
sufficient funds to allow generous camber and drainage systems to be incorporated into areas susceptible to snow and ice build up or heavy rain
a generous government inspired and led compulsory purchase scheme to compensate property owners where dwellings obstruct large scale civil engineering projects.
simple transparent accounting procedures to encourage investors and potential investors to track funds and query unauthorised transfers
consideration of installing cheap road toll systems to finance long stretches of motorway in the long term
method of police control authority with powers to strictly maintain the safety of the road for all users, possibly using speeding cash cameras and heavy fines for transgressors channeled back into the cost of road building and maintenance
regular police patrols and sos points en route to prevent costly pile ups
regular privately tendered motorway service stations with play areas, hotels and restaurants
gradual introduction to other countries in terms of promoting access to hitherto difficult to reach areas in Russia
a one or two generation plan at government level to integrate road and rail networks converging at strategic points across the country
where possible encourage private enterprise to pay for sections of transport, install procedures which enforce new developers to fund the surrounding road networks and amenities for the local community, common in the West

The list goes on and on, at the moment, if my sources are correct, the chain is very simple. Central control of road building projects is in Moscow, a certain amount of money for a motorway network for example, heads out to a city in far East Russia.

Somewhere inbetween sizeable chunks “disappear” and the amount available at the end dwindles so much so that only the poorest of the poorest roads can be built.

Multiply this scenario across Russia, for generation after generation and the result is an enormous problem, the solution of which will take integrity, time , patience and an awful lot of money.

You can kayak or go boating down the Mekong, trek through jungles atop an elephant, go exploring and even rock-climbing in limestone caves, hike mountains in search of remote and ancient temple ruins or camp out in wildlife conservation parks.

Below on this Laos Country Guide is some useful travel information for visitors contemplating a trip to Laos, including suggestions on where and when to go, visa requirements, money used, information about Laos food and drink as well as a handy Travellers’ Dos and Don’ts list.

Traveller Dos and Don’ts

- Do dress modestly when entering temples, museums, official buildings and government offices; no shorts or sleeveless shirts, tank tops or beach wear. Shorts that cover the thighs are acceptable everywhere else. Be clean and neat in appearance whenever possible.
- Do like the locals and keep your sense of time flexible. Expecting punctuality will often lead to frustration.
- Do remove shoes when entering temples and homes (it is convenient to wear slip-ons or sandals)
- Don’t point your feet towards people or Buddha images. When sitting in a temple, keep legs together and to the side in a mermaid position.
- Do consider leaving a small donation when visiting temples.
- Don’t take pictures posing with Buddha images, handle, climb or sit on them
- Don’t, if you are a woman, touch monks, hand them objects, sit with or talk to them outside of temples. Any offerings need to pass through the hands of a man first.
- Do ask permission before taking pictures of people, particularly in villages outside the cities where the people may have superstitions against being photographed.
- Don’t touch people or children on their heads.
- Don’t lose your temper in public – speaking loudly and angrily is often counterproductive.
- Don’t engage in public displays of affection.
- Do greet someone who is greeting you – by nop, handshake or a polite bow and smile – but don’t offer a kiss!
- Do respect the Laos’ interpersonal space – there is little physical contact or closeness between individuals who are not family.
- Don’t be surprised if someone goes right past you to get to something first – Laos generally do not queue up for anything.
- Do bargain for goods in markets and shops (except where there are fixed prices) but do so with a good attitude and smile. Prices are generally not inordinately high to begin with as they may be in other Asian cities.

Visas and Passports

Passports

Passport with at least six months remaining validity required by everyone who enters Laos.

Visas

Required by all nationals from the UK, Australia, Canada, USA and EU countries.

Visa requirements are subject to change and you should check with your embassy to check the latest visa requirements.

Visas on arrival are for 30 days for most nationalities and this can be extended a max of two times for up to 30 days each time.

The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that visas can be issued upon arrival in Laos to tourists at the following ports of entry: Wattay Airport in Vientiane; Pakse and Luang Prabang Airports; Friendship Bridges in Vientiane and Savannakhet; and land-border crossings at Boten, Huay Xai and Chong Mek.

Visa Cost

Visa cost ranges from $20 (China) to $42 (Canada). Sweden is $31, $35 for the USA, UK and most of Europe, $40 for India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and $30 for Australia. The full list is on display at the Visa Application window.

Validity

All visas are issued for single entry and must be used within two months of date of issue.

Applications to: Consulate (or consular section at embassy) or an officially recognized tour operator. A visa valid for Laos can also be obtained from travel agencies in Bangkok (Thailand) or on arrival.

GENERAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

Visa and Health Regulation:
Visa requirements vary from time to time and should be checked with nearest tourist office of diplomatic mission. Health certificates are required but these vary with country of origin and should be checked with relevant authorities. Yellow fever and cholera vaccinations are recommended. Anti malaria medication should be started prior to arrival.

Photography:
Films and batteries are available at most lodges but in restricted stocks and sizes so it is suggested you bring your own supply. A 200 mm to 300 mm telephoto lens is recommended for game and bird photography.
Much of East Africa is generally warm, minimal humidity and cool evenings. Temperatures vary with altitude.

Clothing:
Cotton, linen dresses, light slacks and short sleeved shirts are recommended. Bring a warm sweater, as nights can be chilly at high altitudes. Comfortable walking shoes, swim suit, sun glasses, suntan lotion, flashlight and an alarm clock will complement your safari gear.

Hotel Check in/check out:
Check out time is usually 1000 hours. Hence check in cannot be guaranteed before 1100 hours unless room is reserved from night before. Day rooms up to 1800 hours are usually available.

Accommodation and Meals on Safari Lodges:
Rooms are singles, doubles, triples and suites. Lodge facilities include lounges/bars with log fires, dinning rooms and viewing platforms. Most lodges have outdoor swimming pools.

Tented camps:
These range from simple luxurious and provide spacious twin beds with mosquito netting, private bathrooms and verandas.

Meals:
On safari, meals are provided on full board basis. There is full English breakfast. Lunch is often buffet style set out with salads, cold and hot starters and hot main dishes. Dinner is 3-5 courses with a combination of dishes.

Getting around
BORDER POSTS:
The major crossing point between Kenya and Tanzania is at Namanga, which is open 24 hours a day. Other crossings include Lunga Lunga and Taveta. The Ethiopian border post of Moyale is becoming increasingly dangerous because of civil fighting. The border was closed for a while but has now reopened. For those with four-wheel drive vehicles, a more adventurous route to the west near Lake Turkana is quite popular. Ask the locals for advice before trying this route. There is no border post on either side of the border crossing so you’ll have to get your visa stamped in Nairobi. Malaba and Busimia are the main Ugandan border posts. At present there are no overland crossings with Somalia and Sudan as it is not safe to cross unless part of a refugee convoy.

RAIL & BUS:
Wildlife Safaris Rail is a safe, reliable form of public transport. Passenger services run from Mombasa to Malaba via Voi, Nairobi, Nakuru and Eldoret. It is essential to book tickets two to three days in advance. Kenya has a good network of buses, as well as matatus (minibuses) and share-taxis, but none are very safe as drivers tend to overload and speed, and horrific accidents are reported regularly. Where possible, rail travel should be the chosen means of transport. Private 18-seater buses offer shuttle services connecting Nairobi and Mombasa with Arusha and Moshi in Tanzania, which are more expensive, but more comfortable and safer.

AIRPORTS:
Domestic air services operate between the major airports:
Jomo Kenyatta International, Nairobi (NBO)
Moi International, Mombasa (MBA)
A number of airlines operate between Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nanyuki, Malindi, Lamu and the national parks/reserves of Amboseli, Masai Mara and Samburu.

ROADS:
There are 63,800 km of highways in Kenya, 8,863 km of which are paved. Roads are generally in good condition, but have deteriorated and some stretches are very unsafe. The A104 running from Mombasa to Malaba via Nairobi is a heavy truck route. High speed and unpredictable local driving habits are daily hazards on Kenyan roads. Roads in the north and north-east are predominantly dirt roads and in the rainy season are only navigable by four-wheel drive vehicles. Your national driving license is accepted, with an English translation if necessary. Driving is on the left side of the road. As fuel shortages can occur, it is best to fill your tanks before leaving a major town.

Passports and Visas:
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
All visitors are required to carry a passport that is valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay. There should be sufficient blank pages for entry stamps upon arrival.
Nationals of some countries may obtain visas upon arrival. Check with the Kenyan Consulate beforehand. Those wishing to enter Kenya on business or for longer than 30 days, should obtain a visa from their nearest Kenyan Consulate.

Requirements for this are:
» visa application form,
» business letter (for business visa),
» one passport photograph,
» proof of sufficient funds and onward travel / return ticket.

Visas cost US$50 and are valid for three months.

General Accommodation Info:
Most safari lodges vary in size and style, and are built to blend in with the local environment. Accommodation tends to be of rondavel or banda type, with a lounge, central dining and bar in single unit hotels. Do not be misled by the term “tented accommodation” – this tends to be luxurious insect-proof tents and are usually permanently pitched on concrete bases, often including en suite bathrooms with flush toilets. These are very popular and give the visitor the true experience of being close to nature without the inconvenience and discomfort that can be associated with camping in the open. In the towns, cheaper hotels are definitely avoidable. Prices for higher range hotels vary according to season. Note that although prices may be quoted in US$, payment in local currency is the accepted norm. Campsites in national parks and game reserves tend to be very basic, with running water, but only pit toilets. It is strongly recommended that you reserve all your accommodation as far in advance as possible as availability is often at a premium, especially in peak season.

BUDGET CAMPING:
Budget camping is the ideal way for those who like to “rough it”. The tents are spacious enough for two people and they have a mesh on each window to keep off insects.
All preparations at the camp are made on arrival at the campsite. Guests are often expected to help pitch the tents, but the cooking and cleaning is all left to the camping crew. We recommend visitors to bring their own sleeping bags. Public campsites provide basic washroom facilities of reasonable hygienic standard for budget camping safaris. At some Parks we use semi permanent campsites which offers an upgrade camping style with facilities like showers(hot showers on request) and Flash Toilets.

GAME DRIVES/GAME VIEWING:
The game drive/ game viewing is the standard mode of wildlife viewing in the African national parks, concession, where both regulations and safety considerations restrict exploration on foot. Conditions are ideal for vehicular safaris; rising savanna fame country from the security and comfort of a car, you will encounter a large number and variety of animals imply by chance. Game drives in most of the parks are always invigorating: you may go from one species to the next –observing zebra here, giraffe there, a knot of impala on the right, a trio of elephant bulls ahead. However, there is really no guarantee on what you will see; the animals are free to move around as they please and may even pass beyond park boundaries.

DRIVER GUIDES:
Each safari group will be accompanied by the best driver-guides with expert knowledge in wildlife and other areas of tourist interest. The driver-guides are continually under training on subjects as varied as the maintenance of safari vehicles, client’s safety, the mating habits of various species, preservation and conservation, general knowledge and foreign languages: English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese

Kenya – Health:
Requirements:
Everyone entering Kenya must be in possession of a valid International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever. It is imperative that you obtain malaria prophylactics before entering Kenya. When purchasing these, please tell your doctor or pharmacist that you intend visiting Kenya. It is important to note that the Kenyan authorities have banned the use of chloroquine combinations as prophylaxis, and instead recommend the use of either mefloquine (Lariam/Mefliam) or doxycycline. Start your course at least one week before entering Kenya and continue taking the pills for six weeks after leaving the country. If you suffer from side effects, try taking your malaria prophylactics at night, after dinner. Precautionary measures that you can take to prevent contact with mosquitoes are: sleeping under a bed net or in room/tent with mosquito proofing (remember to keep the flaps zipped at all times), spraying your accommodation with insecticide, making use of a mosquito repelling lotion or stick and wearing long sleeve clothes, trousers and socks when outside at night. Immunization against typhoid, tetanus, tuberculosis, polio, & meningococcal meningitis are recommended.

Medical Services:
Medical services in Kenya are good in urban areas and in the vicinity of game parks and beaches, but are limited elsewhere. Doctors and hospitals often require immediate cash payment, but usually accept major credit cards. It is advisable to secure medical cover on your medical insurance before arriving in the country. Note that major hotels have contracts with physicians and dentists. Visitors are however advised to bring along supplies of specialized medication they may require. Otherwise, medicine may be purchased at pharmacies and emergency pharmacies are open all night.

Safety :
Adventure Safaris Travel in Kenya is generally entirely safe, however, there are the occasional regional ethnic skirmishes. You are advised to remain informed as to the situation in areas to which you plan to travel, particularly remote parts and borders. Ugandan, Somalian and Sudanese shifta (bandits) rove their borders with Kenya. Violent cross-border attacks and cattle raids occur, so it is best to avoid the border regions. Border crossings into Somalia and Sudan are strongly discouraged. Petty crime and theft occurs in some of the urban areas, so be vigilant and keep valuables concealed. Security within the parks is quite good, but never leave possessions unattended. It is always better to travel in a large group.
Water:
While water in major towns is chlorinated and relatively safe to drink, there are frequent breakdowns and this can lead to mild to serious abdominal upsets for first time African travelers. Rather stick to sealed bottled water, which is available from most hotels and lodges, and which is highly advised for the first few weeks of your stay. Do not use ice cubes or eat rare meat, raw seafood or dairy products. Avoid roadside stands and street vendors and only eat well-cooked foods while they are still hot and fruits that can be peeled without contamination.
Seasons and Climate:
SUMMER: December – March
WINTER: July – OCTOBER

Kenya is divided by the equator and enjoys a tropical climate. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and north-eastern parts of the country. The hottest time is in February and March and the coldest in July and August.

The average annual temperatures in the main areas are:
Mombasa (coastal):
Max 30ºC, Min 22ºC
Nairobi: Max 25ºC, Min 13ºC
North Plain lands: Max 34ºC, Min 23ºC

The long rains occur from April to June and short rains from October to December. Rainfall is sometimes heavy and tends to fall in the afternoon and evenings.

WHAT TO PACK:
Generally, casual comfortable clothing is suitable throughout the year. The most practical items to pack for safari are:

» Khaki, green, beige and neutral colors
» Blouses and shirts with long sleeves (even in summer, they will protect you from the sun and from mosquitoes)
» T shirts
» Shorts or a light skirt
» Jeans or safari trousers for evenings and cooler days
» Some hotels and country clubs require gentlemen to wear a jacket and tie and women to be suitably attired for dinner

» A jacket and sweater are recommended for early morning and evening game drives
» Swimwear and beach apparel
» Comfortable walking shoes
» Sun block, sunglasses, hat, insect repellent, moisturizer and lip salve are all essentials

Good quality, locally made clothing and shoes for safaris are available in Nairobi and Mombasa shops at reasonable prices. If you are traveling with an organized safari, it is important to check what your weight limit is. Generally you will need to restrict your luggage to 10-12 kg (packed in a soft bag) plus a reasonable amount of camera equipment.

When to go:
Kenya is a year round destination with excellent game viewing. One of Kenya’s greatest attractions is the annual wildebeest migration between Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This takes place between June and September. Traditional peak season is January to March as this is when the weather is hot and dry and most comfortable for traveling. This is a good time for bird viewing on the Rift Valley lakes. Game viewing at perennial water holes is also good at this time. April – June are less popular times for visiting Kenya as these are the rainy seasons and flooding often occurs. However, it is usually possible to get around easily during these times and the rains do not hinder visibility.

Currency:
The unit of currency is the Kenya Shilling (KSh), which is divided into 100 cents. Notes are in KSh1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are KSH40, 20, 10, 5 and 1 KSH

Basic Costs
EXCHANGE RATE:
The exchange rate is in your favor. Generally, you will find that fine cuisine, wine and entertainment cost a fraction of the tariff charged by equivalent establishments elsewhere in the world. The price of a beer starts at KSh85. A traditional meal will cost about KSh150, while you can expect to pay about KSh500-1000 for a more classy meal. Petrol costs about KSh 105 per liter..

Banking hours: Mon – Fri 09:00 – 16:00
First Sat of each month 09:00 – 11:00

National and international banks have branches in Mombasa, Nairobi, Kisumu, Thika, Eldoret, Kericho and Nyeri and in most other major towns. Banks in Mombasa and the coastal areas open and close half an hour earlier. Banks and bureau de change at international airports are open 24 hours a day

CREDIT CARDS:
All major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club and American Express) are widely accepted.

TIPPING:
Bear in mind that salaries in East Africa tend to be very low, and that people working in service industries rely on tips to supplement their wages. On safari you should tip your driver, cook and guide. These people do not earn very much so you should tip as much as you feel you can, but of course this depends on you and how happy you were with your service.
As in most African countries, there is a huge range of cheap souvenirs to be purchased along the roadside. These are handmade, but mass produced so always check the quality before buying. Materials include ebony, soapstone and ivory. Note that it is illegal to export products that contain any elements of elephant, rhino or sea turtle. Tribal souvenirs are available, including Maasai beaded jewellery, kiondos (woven sisal baskets) and natural or decorated calabashes (dried gourds). Bright sarongs (kangas or kikois) make good wearable souvenirs. If you are after quality artwork, it is probably wisest to look in galleries and shops that deal in it, rather than buying on the black market.

Camping and picnic is one of the most favourite outdoor activities that people love to do whenever they have a free time, especially during weekend holiday. You may go camping picnic with family and friends or anyone. When we talk about picnic or camping, one of the most important issue that first come into our mind is the equipments that we are going to use during the trip. There are so many questions like how to prepare stuff for a curtain kind of camping? Which equipment should to buy? and more. But of the most common question that I have been asked constantly is about picnic backpack, which many people still want guideline about how they can prepare effectively for their picnic.

In the past, we may have seen a lot of people using picnic baskets, but today many people have changed to use picnic backpack instead of picnic basket, due to the convenience and more capacity that picnic backpack can offer so you can rest assured that you will enjoy the trip together with the one you love. Is you are the one that currently use picnic basket like the old times, I strongly suggest to change using picnic backpack and you will find that it provides you more than you ever thought of.

Some people who familiar with picnic basket may have not seen what picnic backpack look like and how to use it. Picnic back is typically similar to hiking backpack. In terms of external look picnic backpack is look pretty much alike ordinary hiking backpack, which usually made from common fabric such as canvas and acrylic. But if we look inside of the backpack and will can see the major different. That is, interior of hiking backpack is specially designed to contain hiking stuff such as trial equipment, clothes and canvas shoes etc. But the interior of picnic backpack is designed to contain picnic stuff. However, it is still hard to imagine about how picnic backpack look like, so let me give you an example for clearly understanding. For example, picnic backpack is able to contain picnic accessories such as plates, wine glasses napkins and a cooler compartment to store your food. It will have special section inside the bag to contain these kind of stuff with extra protection to prevent broken. The backpack may also have the section that use for containing roll of picnic blanket.

About the material that they are made from, as mentioned earlier that picnic backpack generally made from ordinary canvas but they also have kind of cushioned shoulder straps for convenient and comfortable carrying. The special part of picnic backpack can be found inside as there is plenty of space to contain picnic equipment such as lunch boxes, cooler component to maintain food still fresh and ice pouch. Moreover, for wine lover, they could not miss their favourite wine during the picnic, picnic backpack also provide special space for wine bottles and wine glasses with considerable protection so you can be sure that wine bottles and glass will not broken.

It can be said that today most of people still using old-fashion picnic basket, meanwhile there are many people have tried picnic backpack as they can see many of benefit to use them. So it is your own considerations about which kind that suit you the most and then just go for it.

Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing City

Xuanwu Lake Park is built in 1909 based on Xuanwu Lake which covers about 437 hectares. It consists of five islands that divide the lake into four parts. Every part is interlinked by bridges. Most parts of Xuanwu Lake are no deeper than two meters. And it’s suitable to plant lotus. In summer and autumn, Xuanwu Lake is covered by green and pink lotus.

Quite a number of hikers are astonished by the charming scenery. The road around Xuanwu Lake stretches about 10 kilometers. So it’s a ideal destination for hikers to have a try. In an addition, Xuanwu Lake Park is located near Nanjing Railway Station. Consequently, there are several methods to go hiking. It’s convenient to go hiking by walking, bicycling and boating.
Nanjing was the capital of ancient China for six different dynasties. In Ming Dynasty (1368~1644), Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang decided to build Nanjing City Wall to consolidate his sovereignty in purpose of resist invaders. The circumference of the inner ancient wall amounts to as much as 33.7 kilometers in total. There are 2000 bunkers and 24 city gates. You can choose the ancient city wall as your hiking destination. During your hiking, get close to this historic city while enjoying the magnificent artificial works. After more than 600 years, the ancient city wall still stands. Among all the city walls, Zhonghua Gate is best-preserved city gates up to now which is located in the southern part of Nanjing city. And it’s the largest city gate in China, it was designed for resist any invasion. This project was so complicated that Zhonghua Gate is divided into two layers. There are 27 separated bunkers used for hiding as many as 3000 soldiers. Nanjing is the only city in China where you have opportunities to experience this kind of grand project. Please pay your continuous attention to our blogs related to the introductions of Nanjing City hiking spots. And we hope our Shanghai Expo topics will help you make a more detailed plan during your hiking in China during 2010 Expo.

China business travel can surely not be fruitful for you for many reasons such as knot being aware of China business culture. If you are wondering why you couldn’t cut a deal with import and export contract, which is your global sourcing plan, you need to look at the differences Chinese culture has from yours.

China business travel survey puts food & entertainment as the biggest expense head by executives out to evaluate china business potentials for import/export part of global sourcing. China business being the suddenly discovered mantra of the mighty MNCs new vistas are being discovered to replace global sourcing via import/export from China. China business offers invaluable possibilities to an assortment of businesses which triggered business travel exploring import and export opportunities.

While traveling and communicating with potential china business import and export partners, language may pose a barrier – which your hotel manager can help sort out by hiring an interpreter.

Before embarking upon your China business trip, contact travel agencies that are familiar with major cities. Relying on the global Lingua Franca may severely mar your global sourcing and import/export meetings. Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Xi’an are the main business cities to concentrate if you want to make any headway in your China business exploration.

So, ask for a guide with not just familiarity of the area your visit and fluency in communication but conversant in China business culture. Make sure your guide is certified by the China Travel Administration. If you are in luck, you may get a guide with good connections in import and export circles as well. China business hierarchy and addressing/reference are unlike the western.

The impact of skyrocketing import/export and global sourcing hasn’t changed the China business culture, so be prepared for traditional style of introductions and luncheons. Next, global sourcing is has transformed China business transactions with regards to import and export. No doubt, global sourcing manifests the forces of globalization in that the transformative forces can be easily tracked down to the rising thrust on import and export by china business and the government of PRC. So much so, import/export as a replacement to global sourcing is a hotly debated topic around China business circles, although practically global sourcing is not more than a set of strategies for economizing supply-chain and with it, import/export. China business travel is an equally sensitive issue like Global Sourcing is. So be advised ahead of your China business trip about these intricacies.

Mexico is known for a lot of things, and one of them is the beach. There are several Grupo Mayan resorts that you can choose from, offering not only a good view of the sea but also an opportunity to enjoy countless water sports activities. However, even if most of these Grupo Mayan beaches are relatively safe—they do have their own life guards—your safety still remains your primary responsibility and priority.

To make sure that you can really have an enjoyable and safe trip to Mexico, take note of the following suggestions:

1. Practice swimming. A life vest can only do so much for you. You may have to learn the basics of swimming before you try to hit the waters. If not, ensure that you have a companion who can watch out for you as you wade yourself through the Grupo Mayan sea. You should also avoid going far from the sea shore, especially if the area is known to be a surfing paradise. The big waves may just bring you a lot farther, and you can be in big trouble.

2. Swim if there’s a life guard. Even if you know how to swim, there are still accidents that can possibly happen. Some of them can occur when you’re not in the waters. The risks for further complications are lower and chances of being safe are higher if there’s a life guard around.

3. Follow the rules. Every Grupo Mayan beach resort has its own set of rules that you have to obey at all times. They are not only meant to enforce discipline, but they are also created to keep their guests safe when they are already in the beach. Thus, if the policy says that children below 4 feet should not be allowed to swim, then by all means stick with it.

4. Check on the weather forecast. There are only few who would take the time to verify the weather for the day, but they don’t know that doing so can save their lives and even energy. How many times have you actually gone out to the Grupo Mayan beach, only to realize that the waves are just too big for you to handle? You can surf the Internet when you need more information about the wind currents and gales.

5. Protect yourself. You are going to be traveling into the unchartered waters. You cannot definitely determine what is waiting for you once you are already underneath the water. Thus, protect yourself as much as possible. You can wear goggles, so you can clearly see what’s underneath. You may also have to wear comfortable slippers to avoid hurting your feet with pointed rocks or sea urchins that could be lingering in the sea bed.

6. Take note of rip currents. Rip currents are strong and can take you very far from the shore. However, there’s no use in panicking. You will only make matters worse. What you can do is to go with the flow until you will be completely out of the current. Then immediately swim toward the shore. If you feel like you need help, shout for one or wave your hand.

Who doesn’t get the occasional urge to travel? The toughest workaholic would make a yearly or so trip to a domestic or international destination, even if it is only to work more. This urge seems magnified at the end of the year, when Christmas beckons and the lights of distant cities flicker enticingly.

Unfortunately, the increase in tourism also means an increase in petty crime. Criminals at popular tourist destinations tend to see this time of year as an opportunity to increase their “business” as well. This is where safety products such as Pacsafe, as well as other precautions come in.

The seasoned traveller will be interested to invest in the best of safety products to ensure their optimal enjoyment of their adventure. Companies such as Pacsafe provide very high quality products such as backpack protectors and safety bags. They also provide locks and other devices to secure bags to fixtures while you are engaging in leisure activities. Taking these precautions will help you to worry less and enjoy more during your holiday.

In addition to Pacsafe and similar products, the tourist can also take certain actions to ensure their safety during travel. A good piece of advice is for example not to go into the streets after dark, especially when you’re carrying your laptop, handbag, or other valuable devices.

If you must take valuables with you, even during daytime hours, you can never be too safe. Pacsafe anti-theft bags or similar items will keep your valuables out of the hands of criminals. In addition, do not wear bags with long straps over just one shoulder. Thieves can easily grab these from you.

When travelling, it is always best to be safe rather than sorry. This will ensure that you get the most out of your investment.

Brazil is known for its sizzling hot sandy beaches, its lively nightlife, its crystal waters perfect for surfers and sunbathers alike, and its rich cultural traditions seen in its jazz music, samba dance, and delicious African-influenced cuisine. But many travelers to Brazil do not know that the country requires a reciprocity fee and visa from citizens of the United States as well as Canada. If you are planning a trip to Brazil, make sure that you have a Brazil visa in addition to your passport. Here are some tips on how to obtain a Brazil visa for your Brazil travel plans.

Who Needs a Brazil Visa?

The Brazilian visa requires a reciprocity fee from citizens of the United States and Canada, since those countries require a fee and visa from Brazilians when traveling to their countries. Whether you are traveling to Brazil for a vacation or on business, American and Canadian citizens must obtain Brazil visas. Citizens of many Latin American countries, Europe, Asia, and the UK are exempt. Some countries are exempt from the tourist visa only. You can check online by doing a quick search or going to the Brazilian Consulate General’s website to see if your country of citizenship is exempt. If you are a citizen of an exempt country, but are living in a non-exempt country, it is still important that you research the qualifications for your situation carefully.

How to Get a Brazil Visa?

The process for obtaining a Brazil is very strict. To obtain a Brazil visa, you need to go in person to the nearest Brazilian consulate. Brazil visas are not obtained by mail. Do a search online to find a nearby Brazilian consulate; if there are none close by, then you may need to use a visa service or visa agency. There are 1-2 Brazilian consulates in most major US cities. First, make an appointment online or by phone with the consulate to secure a time to meet with a Brazil visa representative.

What do I Need for a Brazil Visa?

You need an original passport, not a copy, for all members of your party. It is also a good idea to bring a copy of your flight itinerary and/or flight tickets or other booking information, so that you can prove the purpose of your trip. Make sure that you bring any documentation that may be pertinent to your Brazil travel plans.

How Soon Can I Get a Brazil Visa?

Brazil visas are prepared within 5 business days as of the day received by the Brazilian consulate, but occasionally it can take longer. There is no option for expediting the process, although you can request that your visa be rushed.

Follow these necessary steps to obtaining your Brazil visa, and you will be on your way to the Brazil vacation of a lifetime!

Today’s air travelers end up spending hour after hour at the airport, often carrying their possessions around with them from gate to gate, shuffling bags while they use the bathroom, purchase and eat food, and just sit around and wait. The more time travelers spend at the airport, the more travelers’ personal security is an issue. These tips will help minimize the risk of losing your valuable belongings while traveling. Travelers’ Personal Security – Packing Security begins at home. When you pack your belongings, place your most valuable items in the carry-on bag that is closest to your body. That way you will always be aware of anyone trying to steal them. For individuals traveling with jewelry, this means wearing your most valuable jewelry in flight. Large diamond ear studs are fine to wear with everyday travel clothing; other travelers will assume they are fake cubic zirconium earrings, or rhinestones. Large necklaces and bracelets can be worn under a turtleneck sweater or other clothing that masks the neck. Make sure your clasps and hooks are in good repair so you do not accidentally lose your jewelry while walking through the terminal. What you cannot wear should be packed in a handbag or fanny pack. Beware of backpacks – would-be thieves can open a bulging backpack and remove valuable items without the traveler ever knowing their personal security was breached. Travelers’ Personal Security – Cash Every traveler needs some cash at the airport for tips, newspapers, meals, and sundries. However, no traveler should carry more cash than absolutely necessary. Usually about $20 to $30 in fives, tens, and ones will meet the traveler’s need for cash at the airport. Every modern airport has an ATM. If you need cash at your destination, use the airport ATM after you arrive at your final stop. Carrying, and flashing, large amounts of cash create an irresistible temptation for thieves. Travelers’ Personal Security – Shopping The best security advice is to travel with a companion who can watch your belongings for you while you shop, eat, and use the restroom. If you are traveling alone, rent a locker to store your belongings while you wait for your flight to board. Even if you need to rent two or more lockers to stow all your belongings, you will be relieved to carry a small key around with you instead of rolling and toting bags and baggage filled with your valuable belongings. Travelers’ Personal Security – Security Check One of the places most travelers commonly lose things is, ironically, when they go through security. As you pass through security lies, be cognizant of how many bins or trays you have left your belongings in, and be sure you have checked that same number of bins or trays before you leave the security area.
